The Federal Reserve (The Feds) is thinking about a second round of “Quantitative Easing, also known as QE” Quantitative easing is a government monetary policy occasionally used to increase the money supply by buying government securities or other securities from the market (http://www.investopedia.com/). The preceding policy had many trade-offs and one of the most common is inflation or hyperinflation. Hopeful, we will not end up like Germany after the World War I where we will have to push wheelbarrows full of money just to buy a loaf of bread.
The first round of “Quantitative Easing” was to keep interest rates at nearly zero percent and they have been at that rate for about two years now. The second round will involve the federal government buying treasury bonds and private securities. The preceding process will provide the economy with the liquidity that it needs. However, excess liquidity is a fancy name for inflation.
The Dow Jones reaching 11,000 points today is another indicator that Wall Street, once again, is a lot smarter than the federal government. Let me explain! Investing is all about buying low and selling high and the difference is capital gains. Wall Street knows that the government is going to buy treasury bonds and private securities in order to stimulate the economy, therefore they went ahead and bought securities. Wall Street’s speculative transactions pushed the Dow to the 11,000 mark for the first time in 5 months. The moment the federal government starts buying securities; Wall Street will start selling them
Productivity, efficiency, and effectiveness are the best fundamentals for real equity growth. Quantitative Easing lacks all three of these preceding fundamentals. Dow 11,000 mark is flawed. Responsible investors must leave their money in fixed income accounts and leave the stock market for speculators for now. I have been trying to deal with the frustration and anger that I have toward the whole oil spill situation. Above all I would like to express my condolences for the families and loved ones of the people that lost their lives in this explosion. For years, I have argued with my friends, colleagues, and associates over the topic of oil drilling close to our coasts. Being a small business owner, I run into several people that tend to favor the continuation of our reliance on this substance. Many times my capitalist card was questioned, and I have actually lost associates because I would not acquiesce to the “need” to drill off our coasts.

Saying I told you so or rubbing in the victory in the argument does not change the horrific outcome. And like many other things that I have predicted in politics, I truly wish that I were the one that was proven wrong. The losses to wildlife, plant life and economic resources are incalculable at the moment and it’s only going to get worse before it gets better. This is seemingly the new mantra for Florida.

As more details emerge there will be all sorts of finger pointing and negotiation as to who did what and who will do what. Ultimately, BP will pay for some of the clean up, the oil industry will pay for some of the clean up, and we will pay for some of the clean up. That is just the beginning.

If you can put a price on species loss what would it be? There are several that are in peril in the region. If you could predict what the losses to fishing and shellfish industries what number would you put that at? How about the loss to beach and boating tourism? With tourism and housing already suffering, what industries do we have to pick up the slack in the State’s economy? Who is going to have to deal with those costs? Well, we will find out and we get to do it the hard way.

Some of the major questions I have with this situation are:

How are BP and the larger industry talking about limiting their responsibility to millions when damage is already in the billions? Add to that – were they not one of the largest profits on record for the last couple of years?

Just exactly how many procedural rules and regulations were broken with regard to this rig and how many more out there are in the same position?

What is the estimated amount of oil in the coasts? Do the risks and costs justify the action? Is there even enough left to cover the costs associated with the spill? When asked about the rumor that there was a very limited supply in the coasts – about enough to make a week to ten days in the world supply, the spokesperson for the industry did not answer.

As a fiscal conservative and a conservationist, it is my opinion that we cannot afford to continue efforts to expand drilling off the coasts. We cannot afford to allow more potential disasters with limited obligation by the oil companies. We should not allow other countries to drill within our national boundaries. We must end this addiction to an energy source that profits few and burdens many. Most of our political entanglements throughout the globe revolve around the thirst for this commodity. Bio-Diesel, Natural Gas, and Nuclear energy if combined could significantly reduce our dependence on petroleum. The money that this clean up alone is going to cost could have been well utilized in helping ramp up the production and planning for the conversion to Bio-Diesel and Natural Gas. The money that it costs to build and operate a rig that will not produce for close to ten years could go a long way to doing the same – especially when you talk about the potential for hundreds of rigs. The oil industry claims to be the leader in alternative exploration and development – let them put their money where their mouth is. I for one grow very tired of paying for others’ mistakes. Alas, this is the way of contemporary politics..UNLESS!!!

It is really quite simple for me. I am 100% in favor of LEGAL immigration. I would be willing to adjust the quotas that we have for each nationality of immigrant. I would be willing to devise a system that allowed for migratory workers to flow back and forth, provided they are properly accounted for and taxed just like any other working individual. Give us your poor, tired and huddled masses. We only ask one thing, you get in line and check in.

I am very much opposed to ILLEGAL immigration. Since when do we grant amnesty to people willingly breaking the law? Even political refugees and people claiming political asylum are counted for and processed under the legal guidelines. Estimates have ranged from 20 million to 80 million illegal immigrants have entered this country in the last several years. By all historical accounts (using the 20 million) that is the largest invasion in world history. It may be peaceful if you don’t count the crime many times associated with these individuals or the individuals practicing as couriers of humans. There is not another country on the planet that is so tolerant to let that many people have access to their resources and direct influence on their politic. It is dangerous to their sovereignty and they will claim so proudly. Perhaps the most unsettling part is plain courtesy. How rude is it to cut to the front of the line? Why should lawbreakers be granted amnesty while legal immigrants have been paying application fees, waiting for approval (sometimes for years), paying taxes and being a part of the system they want to join? That is akin to giving the cheaters A’s and the people that studied C’s.

I see Arizona in desperation by enacting this bill. They knew the political pressure would be on and did so anyway. It is a direct statement to the federal government that says: enforce the laws you have. If you choose not to then it is our duty and obligation to protect our state, not to mention the Constitutional right to do so.

Inevitably, the proponents of giving the country away will cry racial profiling. The law is not much different than the federal law that is not being enforced. Many states already have identification requirements. Will Hispanics be stopped and asked for their ID, Absolutely, but much like Central Florida, Hispanics are the majority and not the minority so this will of course occur. And in their zeal to be PC, law enforcement will feel obligated to spread the enforcement around. Witness the 80 year old grandma that got searched at the airport after 9/11. In the end if you have identification that proves your legal status within the country, you will be told to have a nice day. If you do not, you will be illegal and the law will finally be enforced and you will be escorted out of the country. It is a tough solution to a tough problem and the State is doing what the Feds do not have the political will to do and that is secure their sovereignty. This is not a racial issue, it’s a criminal, political, and sovereignty (state and federal) issue. There are illegal immigrants from all over. Some of the larger groups come from the former Soviet Union, China, India, and Southeast Asia. I will concede that most of these illegals are not entering through Arizona, but the law could and should apply to them as well. In addition to giving local authorities the power to identify and remove illegal immigrants, I believe you need to address a primary source of enticement. The businesses that sponsor illegally coming here to work should be punished with a first time warning and massive fine and the second offense should be a revocation of business license.

I do not care what color of skin you have or what language you speak, you are welcome to come to America and start a new life. You can do so with minimal difficulty and lots of help legally. It may take a little time and there is a line in front of you, but most say it’s worth it. Should you choose to disobey the laws and cheat other humans from their rightful spot, then regardless of your cultural background you should be asked to leave.
