Every student is required to write an essay for various reasons. Theses, dissertations, essays, and term projects are some of the occasions when a student has to present a research on their subject for academic review.

Every student is required to write an essay for various reasons. Theses, dissertations, essays, and term projects are some of the occasions when a student has to present a research on their subject for academic review. What many people do not realize is that essay writing is a fairly complicated task that requires a pretty scientific approach to its topic. And regardless of what one may think, not everyone is equipped to write well. Of course, writing is a skill that improves with practice, but one cannot learn overnight to produce a project the next day. This is a common problem in a modern world where writting skills are fading by the day. This is where a professional essay writing service helps.

Professional essay writing service is of great help for students and professionals alike who struggle in their efforts to perfect the writing skills. Of course, these are questioned by many teachers and academics who say that the use of such customized essays would lead to increased lethargy and complacency among students regarding their education. But the problem is precisely the other way round. Students do not have time to write and, therefore, they choose these services. With additional classes, college annual exams and various tests taking up most of their time, students struggle with the task of essay writing. This is the least of their problems. Many students are not capable of writing down long and perfect essays that will portray their projects in the best light. And there is always the case of being unable to translate thoughts into words. These are some of the problems that a professional essay writing UK service seeks to eradicate.

Academic essays requested to be presented to the college can be curriculum essays of various types, admission essays or scholarship essays. These are important tasks and the lack of proper writing skills could lead to the students losing a chance for the bright future. This can be avoided by choosing the right essay writing service. There are a lot of these services available on the internet. Most students go in for customized essays as they are running short of time and find themselves paying no attention to language in their writing. But these services are not without their flaws. Some of these sites are known to plagiarize topics and ideas and pass them on to their clients. This is dangerous and must be avoided.

There are many essay writing services that are available and can be contacted for the benefit of their service. For example, if one were looking for a custom essay UK service, all one has to do is log on to the internet and search. Most of these services are available at affordable rates and are much liked by students and professionals. An essay writing service helps to create unique and impressive essays that allow the individual to establish their reputation in the academia.

Tackling the custom research paper has always been a concern for the university and college students.
Tackling the custom research paper has always been a concern for the university and college students. It is often found that students fare poorly when it comes to these custom research papers mainly due to the reason that they do not get sufficient amount of time to submit these papers. This in turn poses a problem in front of the students as they are not able to find quality research paper writing services in short period. At other times, the students are not able to provide accurate information to be included in the research paper, and thus the writers fail to write a good piece thereof.

A custom research paper can be classified into two main categories- the argumentative type and the analytical type. A quality research paper needs to follow some writing steps including the selection of the topic, identification of information, proper research, actual penning down and editing.

At times, the quality of the research paper depends largely on information that is available with the professional writers. The gathered information from various sources actually depends on the primary as well as the secondary sources. The primary source of a good paper includes the first hand details gained from targeted people and other sources to collect relevant information. On the other hand, a research paper can even get the required details from secondary source, i.e. the existing sources, such as books, magazines or any other material.

For instance, a lawyer completing the research paper on a certain case will go through the case histories of identical nature in order to support the ideas. Similarly, the scientist may read numerous cases for establishing the concept about any scientific idea or principle. So, we can say that a custom research paper is a just like an extended essay, representing and reflecting the interpretation and evaluation of the writer on a certain specific idea or subject.

The writer of a custom research paper needs to be in a position to know the audience for the particular paper. It is imperative to note that the paper should make an impact in the minds of the readers and get the student good grades.

Before beginning to work on the research paper, it is important to select the best topic. This topic needs to be debated well in case it is of the argumentative type and can be posed in a question form if it is of the analytical type. The writer of a research paper should understand the paper topic well and by this he or she will be able produce the best of writing. This will also help the writer to get ample quality information related to the topic.

Thus we can conclude that research papers include survey of the area of knowledge in order to produce the best and most authentic argument regarding the research paper topic. With a positive approach, the research paper can prove to be a complete guide to the topic selected. So wait no more and hire the services of great research paper writing company and enjoy good position in your college or university.

While searching the net I par oozed this great article from the writer of “The Secret DNA of Writing Essays-And Everything Else” he also has a “Essay Writing Services.
The Sea Gypsies realized that the Myanmar were not looking at large patterns, that the Myanmar did not see important processes, that they were not looking with any particular purpose, and that they didn’t know how to look in a way of seeing the big perspective of their changing environment.
What a subtly implied, perfect pattern for seeing the problems and understanding the solutions for just about anything, even writing (with a few small insertions, here):
.	They were collecting parts.
.	They were not looking at patterns.
.	They saw nothing of processes
.	They looked at nothing with the right purpose.
.	They don’t know how to look in full perspective.|

Rhetoric is taught with academic pride and flourish at major universities around the world, and it’s closely associated with the prestigious, ancient name of Aristotle, one of the greatest thinkers that Western Civilization has ever produced. Yet — though most people don’t know it, including many teachers of writing — Rhetoric has historically been surrounded by a tradition and reputation for deceit and corruption.
Just about everyone knows that Socrates was negative about Rhetoric, as shown by Plato in his Gorgias dialogue. In it, Socrates concludes, “Rhetoric is mere flattery and disgraceful declamation.” What most don’t know is that even proponents of Rhetoric have had a lot of negative things to say about it.
Negative Statements from PROPONENTS of Rhetoric
For instance, the ancient Roman philosopher and statesman Cicero (106-43 B.C.) taught Rhetoric to the sons of the aristocracy in Rome. And he wrote several books on Rhetoric, including De Inventione (On Invention), De Oratore (a dialogue that discusses the principles of Rhetoric), and Topics (a rhetorical treatment of common topics). However, Cicero thought that the most important factor in eloquence is to — exaggerate and amplify the truth!!! In fact, he thought that speaking the truth was something that a speaker should do only when it suits his purpose! And Cicero’s overarching purpose in life was—”To plant in the world an everlasting memorial of myself.” What an idealist….
Quintilian (35-100 A.D.) also taught Rhetoric to the youth of the nobility of Rome, as his chief occupation. His master work was Institutio Oratoria, a twelve-volume work on Rhetoric that borrowed from many sources, but more from Cicero than from any other. Quintilian felt that verecundia (Latin for a combination of modesty, decency, and restraint) was an absolute vice in an orator because it would make him hesitate, change his mind, or possibly even stop his talking to think things over! Heaven forbid!
Dio Chrsysostom (40-120 A.D.) was a Roman philosopher, orator, and historian who was banished from the Roman Empire at one time. He protested that he was not a Rhetorician because he did not make money, he was not interested in crooked deals, and he did not promote things in the market place — for he was not a Rhetorician!
Another Roman writer who agreed with Dio Chrsysostom was Lucian of Samosata (125-180 A.D.), who was formally trained as a rhetorician. Lucian claimed that a Rhetor is a “pushing, driving, money-chasing operator who leaves any sense of decency, propriety, moderation, and shame at home when he goes to work.” How’s that for putting down yourself, your profession, and your fellow practitioners of Rhetoric?
Probably a turning point for Rhetoric was St. Augustine’s (354-430 A.D.) acceptance of Rhetoric as a major tool in his ministry with the Catholic church. He felt that, since the devil uses the powerful devices of Rhetoric, those on God’s side should also be free to use it in self-defense (I don’t quite understand that logic — Let me get this straight, now: So if the devil uses lies and deceptions, then The Church should do so, too? What about murder — same reasoning? Doesn’t sound like very Christian logic to me… ).
St. Augustine made several statements indicating he was well aware of the deceptive nature of Rhetoric, especially in letters, where he often had to tell his readers that his enthusiasm was real and truthful, and not just rhetorical activities, rather than truthful activities.
A much more modern negative comes from Professor Wayne C. Booth (1921-2005) of the University of Chicago, in his last book published before his death, The Rhetoric of RHETORIC (2004). In it, Professor Booth points out that, beyond a doubt, in the United States and surely throughout much of the world, we are harmed daily by floods of careless or even deliberately harmful “Media Rhetrickery.”
That term, “Media Rhetrickery,” is Booth’s unique term for the widespread misuse of Rhetoric in the media, which incessantly employs Rhetoric for tricky, deceitful, and corrupt purposes. Booth spends a great deal of time in his book talking about various forms of “rhetrickery” (Rhetoric used for tricky and deceitful purposes), often apologizing for the demeaning use of Rhetoric that occurs so frequently in all walks of life. Coming from Booth, this is a heavy indictment of Rhetoric, though he doesn’t mean it to be an indictment, since he has always been a highly respected authority on, and proponent for, the positive values of Rhetoric.
Negative Statements from OPPONENTS of Rhetoric
Of course, opponents have been plenty frank about their own assessments of Rhetoric, and we’ll examine a few of their sentiments, as well.
For example, Francis Bacon (1561-1626) — English philosopher, statesman, scientist, lawyer, jurist, author — thought that Rhetoricians of his time were far too much interested in the nice arrangements of their sentences, and the decoration of their works with tropes and figures, than in the weight of matter, worth of subject, soundness of argument, originality, or depth of judgment of their writing and speeches (The Advancement of Learning, 1605).
John Locke (1632-1704) — the great English thinker and philosopher — concluded that the purpose of Rhetoric was to imply wrong ideas, inflame the passions, and thereby mislead the audience’s judgment; and he claimed that the techniques of Rhetoric are “perfect cheats… wholly to be avoided… rhetoric, that powerful instrument of error and deceit” (An Essay Concerning Human Understanding, 1690). What a powerfully negative statement!
Most probably the most brilliant — yet commonsensical and scholarly — modern text on Rhetoric is the 1984 book by C.H. Knoblauch and Lil Brannon, Rhetorical Traditions and the Teaching of Writing. In this largely ignored book of keen insights into Rhetoric, the authors actually attack the revival of classical Rhetoric as being a barrier to the creation of a new rhetoric, which a lot of experts have been clamoring for.
Why? Because, as they show, the ancient creators of Rhetoric believed that it merely provides a means of presenting or displaying truths which have been independently validated in a traditional but unnecessary verbal dress, that Rhetoric was largely a ceremonial exercise. In other words, Rhetoric has always provided mainly the forms of speaking and writing without substance or content — and what greater condemnation can you have than that?
Stephen Spender (1909-1995) — English poet, novelist, essayist — provided an interesting negative insight into both Rhetoric and rhetoricians when he opined, “Rhetoric is the art of deception, isn’t it? And when you become good at using rhetoric on other people, you eventually and all unknowingly use it on yourself.”
Rhetoric Corrupted the Roman Empire
The first interaction of Romans with professional Sophistic Rhetoricians was to expel them from the city. How could that happen? Well, even Roman peasants knew that Rhetors were notorious for lacking in values and virtues, being interested almost exclusively in money and fame (like Cicero). And Sophist Rhetors were widely known to criticize and tear down everything of moral repute. That’s what they had done to the Greek culture.
But the Sophistic Rhetors were great entertainers. They persevered and finally broke down the Roman public’s prudent resistance towards them through excessive flattery and through an intensive campaign of debunking established values, confounding commonsense conclusions, and turning on a vast amount of charm, wit, and synthetic sincerity. As Rhetors overcame the public’s resistance and became almost their only source of entertainment, the insatiable hunger of the people for such entertainment everywhere throughout the Roman Empire was matched only by an unbridled passion for the spoken word. There was nothing they would not pay for suaviloquentia, “pleasing speech,” the top-selling product of the Second Sophistic period that caught on and stuck.
As St. Augustine pointed out, the dominating desire of people through the Roman Empire was to relax and enjoy themselves at the theaters and games (sound like anything you’re familiar with?). Lucian was more specific: He explained that the Rhetors simply got them drunk and went to work on them; the huge audiences that filled amphitheatres were paralyzed before they knew what hit them. They were putty in the hands of well-trained Rhetoricians, helpless automatons without a mind or will of their own.
Because of the popularity and influence of professional Rhetors, Rhetoric became the chief study in schools for the elite throughout the Roman Empire. Parents didn’t want their children to study the hard way. They insisted that eloquentia or Rhetoric was the most important thing in the world for their children to learn, and that’s what they were taught, almost exclusively.
And so schools were not interested in turning out experts. They gave their students just enough background to enable them to follow the main ideas of scholarly authors. And along with merely the main idea of every subject, every treatise, every speech studied, they were taught the Rhetorical techniques that allowed them to supply simplistic, entertaining prose that allowed them to appear knowledgeable when they weren’t, eventually reducing all scholastic output to impotence. Thus, the educated elite perpetuated a long line of Rhetors that achieved wonderful reputations and acquired great wealth in public activities from cities, dynasts, kings, and private individuals. They spoke a great deal, but were sadly lacking in intelligence, according to Dio Chrysostom, an eye-witness of the times.
From 100 A. D. onward in the Roman Empire, in every branch of science and art, there was an universal inability to create new compositions, as well as a complete incapacity to invent anything new, which is typical of an age devoid of all creative power. It’s not a new story. As Rhetoric came to be the dominant force in other flourishing cultures, such as Greece, Egypt, Babylonia, and the Arabic empire, the same mental and moral degradation occurred as Rhetoric began to dominate each of them.
Other forces had their telling influences, to be sure. But it was the universal worship and practice of Rhetoric that corrupted the Roman Empire and brought it to its knees.
You wondered where Rhetoric got its bad reputation?
Now you know.

While surfing the net we came across this great article from the writer of “The Secret DNA of Writing Essays-And Everything Else” he also has a “Essay Writing Services.
In order, then, here are all three steps of the NewView Analysis of Short Stories:
STEP #1: Spot the OV strong value statement early on
STEP #2. Note the OV supports/undercuts in the middle
STEP #3. Find the NV Reverse at the end
As you master these three steps, you’ll find they are your catchall, your bucket for catching and taming that blizzard of literary elements that textbooks and your teacher love to throw at you.
Most important, you’ll understand each story in its own OV-NV terms, without having to refer to some outside source.
Wow! Just think of that! |
The first time I taught VALUES in a writing class, I told my students to go home and write down as many strong experiences as they could think of in their lives. Next to each, they were to write out a strong reversal that was closely related to each strongly positive or strongly negative experience and based on further experiences from their lives or from the lives of people they personally knew.
I provided several examples on the white board so they would be sure to understand, and we discussed those a bit. And I explained that the assignment was to help them identify material they could write about in the several types of essays they would be completing throughout the course of the class. They seemed to ‘get it.’
However, before the next class period, two unhappy students came to see me. They were having trouble finding values in their lives that they could reverse.
The first student, Jared, stood in front of my desk and said, ‘I don’t see what you mean by positive and negative values in my life. I guess I’ve got a stable but boring life,’ he laughed.
I laughed, too, and responded, ‘Well, how are your experiences, your relationships, at home? What are the values-really positive, really negative? Just so-so, nothing to brag about or complain about?’
‘Just so-so, I guess. We get along okay, actually. No real problems. Nothing really wonderful, either, I guess.’
I chuckled and said, ‘Okay, I know what you mean. What about your health? How’s that? Great shape, bad shape-what?’
Jared offered, ‘Well, my health’s okay, too, I guess.’ He paused. ‘There is one thing, though.’ He looked down at his feet. ‘I’ve got diabetes, but it’s under control. I eat right and take my insulin at the right times. No big deal.’
I smiled and replied, ‘I think you might have something to write about there, Jared. So how do you think most people look at or view or value diabetes, what are their overall expectations about diabetes-do they view it positively or negatively?’
He looked off into the distance, out the window, and said, ‘Actually, my friends kid me about all the great food I can’t eat any more, like hot fudge sundaes. But, you know what?’ Jared seemed a bit defensive, and he got a bit animated and energetic at this point. ‘Because I watch what I eat, I eat better than they do, and I take better care of myself because of my diabetes. In twenty years, I betcha I’ll be in much better shape than they’ll be in!’
‘Bingo! You’ve got it, Jared! While most people see diabetes as a very negative value and have negative expectations about it, you value it as an experience that makes you discipline yourself so that you take better care of your body, and you’ll be better off in the long run for it!’
‘Actually, now that I think about it, it’s paying off in the short-run, too, Mr. Drew. I’m already in better shape than my friends. They eat all kinds of junk food, and they stuff themselves when they shouldn’t.’
‘Okay, then! You’ve got your thesis for your first essay in our class, a cause-and-effect paper-now go write down more strong values with strong reverses!’ Grinning, Jared left.
The second student, Pamela, started off in the same negative way: ‘I guess I’ve just got a do-nothing life, Mr. Drew. I don’t know what to do with this assignment,’ she said in a monotone, looking at her feet.
‘Well, Pamela, as we showed on the board in class, just write down some positive things you feel strongly about and some negative things you feel strongly about. And then write down reverses next to them.’ I motioned to the chair beside my desk, and she sat down.
‘What positive things? Since my parents got divorced eight months ago, nothing’s been positive,’ she mumbled, dull-eyed, staring downward.
‘That truly is not a positive thing, Pamela,’ I gently sympathized, ‘and I’m sure sorry it happened to you and your family [uncomfortable pause] … but it may be something you could write about since you feel so strongly about it. For instance, what do you think most kids your age feel and think about divorce-what do they expect from it, positive things or negative things?’
‘Like me, they think it’s a bummer-and it really does suck,’ she said, and she seemed to reflect for a moment. ‘But I guess there IS a sort of silver lining to the whole thing. I get to see my dad more, y’know. He schedules time every week with me so he can come over and take me out and do things with me.’
‘I see. You’re referring to the saying that, Every dark cloud has a silver lining. Any other silver linings-good things that happened after the unhappy divorce that didn’t happen with your dad before the divorce, when he was living at home?’
‘Well, yeah. He takes me more places, and he buys me more stuff. Now that I think about it, he even gives me more money than he ever did before!’ Pamela was grinning faintly, now.
‘You’re on the right track, Pam. Now you’ve identified the positives about divorce-the reverse of the negative value expectations, that everybody sees divorce as just totally bad. As you said, there’s really a silver lining in it for you because you get to see your dad more, he takes you more places, he buys more things for you, and he even gives you more money than he ever gave you before the divorce.
‘Sounds like you’ve probably got lots of details to support your thesis that, Divorce isn’t so bad, after all-at least not in your experience. Now use that same method of looking for silver linings with some other negative values in your life, and you’ll have plenty of material for all the essays you have to write after your cause-and-effect paper on divorce.’
‘Thanks, Mr. Drew. I understand the assignment a lot better, now. See you in class!’ Pamela stood up from her chair and walked away, smiling.
After those two interviews, I wondered why they were able to ‘get it’ in class and ‘get it’ when talking with me, but not by themselves. Days later (I can be pretty slow sometimes), it finally struck me: In each case, something was handy-me!-to prompt them and keep them focused on the process and on the purpose.
The students just didn’t know how to look for the right patterns. They hadn’t really gotten the overall perspective, and they needed prompting to help them gather the strong values.
So that night I worked on my computer for several hours and came up with a table that had clear prompts to help students gather the strong value experiences in their lives, which would make a handy guide for all their writing for the entire semester. It looked a bit like this, with these column headings across the top —–
………………………School………Friends………Family………Church………Other
And on the left of the table, as headings for three rows, from left to right, making a total of fifteen squares to fill in with strong values and their reverses ——-
CONSTANT Values people & events & conditions
REPEAT Values successes & failures & duds
SINGLE EVENT Values surprises & accidents & adventures
You get the idea, right? And it worked for those students!
Since then, I’ve made several improvements to the table, but the basic idea, the basic principles are the same. You can probably see some changes to make to the table, yourself.
Next time you have to write an essay, try the table!
You’ll like it!
It’ll brighten your thesis — no matter what the essay assignment!!!

While searching the net I discovered this great article from the writer of “The Secret DNA of Writing Essays-And Everything Else” he also has a “Essay Writing Services.
So what does your new book offer as an alternative to rhetoric? “My book, The Secret DNA of Writing Essays – And Everything Else, presents NewView, a breakthrough concept based on all the kinds of newnesses – there are only five, believe it or not – that generate content. That’s the opposite of Rhetoric, of course, which supplies only form. I developed NewView in my Master’s thesis and have used it to win awards as a technical writer for the past twenty-five years. NewView actually works really well with Rhetoric by ensuring the new content for readers / audiences that Rhetoric neglects. NewView is also easy to understand, and is already being used by students, teachers, and businessmen.|

“Oh no! Not another essay to write on literature!”
If you’ve ever been in a class where essay writing on literature is taught, you’ve probably said those words yourself or heard someone else say something close to that.
It wouldn’t have anything to do with the fact that you have to pick a literary device—such as characterization, plot, irony, symbolism, imagery, tone, conflict, denouement, or one of fifty other alien concepts—to write about, would it? Thought so.
And whenever these assignments come up, you probably don’t even bother to figure out just why those zillion literary devices ruin a good story, right? You simply can’t see the forest for the trees.
Let me explain—All those literary devices are “the trees,” and “the forest” is the whole of the interesting story. Simply put, then: When you have to focus on the details of the structural pieces and forms in a story, you lose the interesting entertainment of a story because all those pieces and details make it impossible to keep track of the story as a whole.
You see, this focus on pieces and parts all began around the 1930s, when a movement called The New Criticism started up in America. The New Critics had the quaint idea that you should understand a story on its own terms, without referring to outside sources such as the author’s life and thought, the genre, or the current literary trends. They believed that all you need is what’s in the story.
Actually, that wasn’t a bad idea—that is, until they ignored their own main principle and brought in all those alien literary devices from the outside that related mainly to just the pieces of a story.
What those New Critics missed was something that every lover of stories knows, but just about never is able to put into words, and it has to do with the wholeness (“the forest”) of a story, not its pieces (“the trees”), which is this: By the end of a story, something important has to change—or there’s no newness and no story! (You knew that, right?)
Here’s how it works: In absolutely every published story, what changes at the end always relates to something important said early on in the story, either by or about the main character. And that early statement is always a strong evaluation or description concerning a trait, characteristic, goal, problem, or desire related to the main character. That’s what I call the OldView. The change at the end I call the NewView, which is always a Reverse of the OldView.
With that one principle—the change between the important OldView at the beginning and the NewView Reverse at the end—as your tool for understanding a story, you can make sense of every literary device in every story ever written and published. Why? Because authors always use the parts (literary devices) in their stories to support the OldView-NewView change that provides the wholeness that makes a story a story. And that goes for both short stories and novels, any kind of story.
For example, in Edgar Allan Poe’s famous short story, The Cask of Amontillado, at the end of the fourth paragraph, Montresor (the main character) says, “I was so pleased to see him, that I thought I should never have done wringing his hand.” This OldView value statement is the strongest evaluation of Montresor’s feelings up to that point in the story.
True, most everything said before that was about Montresor discussing the revenge he would take on Fortunato. But it is all said matter-of-factly, businesslike, with little warmth or energy. Most professional commentary on the story indicates that Montresor being pleased and “wringing his hand” is just part of his deceiving Fortunato about his hidden desires for revenge. But the story reveals that it is more than just that. “How’s that?” you ask.
Well, at the end of the story, the following statement by Montresor provides a NewView Reversal to the important OldView strong value statement we just looked at: “My heart grew sick — on account of the dampness of the catacombs. I hastened to make an end of my labour.”
The dash-dash ( — ) indicates Montresor is adding an afterthought, one in which he tries to turn around the truth of what he has just said—that his heart really was sick at what he had done in killing his friend, Fortunato. Physically speaking, the dampness would make only his lungs sick, not his heart, as any doctor will tell you.
In the OldView at the beginning, Montresor said, “My smile NOW was at the thought of his immolation [sacrificial killing].” So why isn’t he smiling and happy at the end, when he is completing his great revenge on Fortunato? Why is it that his “heart grew sick,” and why is he in haste “to make an end of” his labor?
Why not drag out the final acts of his revenge, enjoying his triumph, as he had been doing at the beginning, as well as during the middle of the story—”I was so pleased to see him, that I thought I should never have done wringing his hand”? His statement, “My heart grew sick” really is a NewView Reversal of what we expected of Montresor all along, since he was smiling outwardly and inwardly from the start of the story at the prospect of avenging himself on his friend.
Montresor truly was sick at heart, not of body, as he realized he no longer would have his friend to tease and to torment at his fanciful whim and idle leisure. Yes, Montresor was sick at heart, but it wasn’t because of the dampness of the catacombs. Once he noted his own unhappiness, as soon as he realized his friend was finally dead, even before the walling up was completed, he used only four brisk and businesslike sentences to wrap up the story, with no sense of triumph or glee at having accomplished his revenge.
As a last touch, Montresor wistfully pronounces that Latin phrase which for centuries has been used to say goodbye to our respected friends and loved ones, “In pace requiescat,” which translates as, “In peace may he rest.” Not exactly what you’d say of an enemy you hated, now, is it?
The following example thesis statements demonstrate how knowing the changing OldView-NewView relationship in Poe’s short story makes it easier to write about the literary devices in the story:
?	In The Cask of Amontillado, every teasing thing Montresor says to Fortunato on their walk through the wine cellar has a triple meaning—considering Montresor’s hidden intent of killing Fortunato while still being his friend and enjoying his teasing of his friend-and so is highly ironic.
?	In Poe’s story, The Cask of Amontillado, the most important conflict is the one Montresor has with himself at the end over whether to complete the dastardly deed of killing a man for whom he still has feelings of friendship.
?	In the short story, The Cask of Amontillado, the trowel Montresor shows to Fortunato is not only an image of the literal means of his death, but it is also an image of the huge joke he is building for his cherished friend.
?	The walling up of Fortunato in Poe’s story The Cask of Amontillado is symbolic not only of Montresor walling up his hatred for Fortunato, but, sadly, also of walling up and hiding his tender feelings of friendship for Fortunato.
?	The theme in Poe’s story, The Cask of Amontillado, could be, ‘Never let friendship, a few bones, salt peter (nitre), excessive dampness, or the truth get in the way of a little friendly revenge.’
This pattern of OldView strong value statement up front changing to a NewView Reverse at the end works not only in every published short story, but also in every published long story, which we call novels.
Take, for instance, Jane Austen’s brilliant novel, Pride and Prejudice, well-known to and beloved by both the American and English cultures. In the beginning of the story, Mr. Darcy is not only disliked by Elizabeth and her mother, Mrs. Bennett, but also by the entire town of Meryton: “He was the proudest, most disagreeable man in the world, and everybody hoped that he would never come there again.”
At the end of the story, when Elizabeth discovers that Darcy has rescued Lydia and the reputation of the entire Bennett family, she reverses her prejudiced opinion of him and falls in love with him. And Elizabeth expresses her reversed feelings for Darcy almost at the very end of the story. Then, with Elizabeth’s engagement to Darcy, her family also reverses their feelings about him—the town, too, probably, though we are not told so—a perfect OldView-to-NewView pattern of change by reversal, a romantic’s pure NewView Reverse delight!
Another English novel very familiar to the American public is J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings, which as a movie became a box office hit in America and around the world. The written story was even better because it shows the changing OldView-NewView relationship so very clearly. And the written story has a bonus—three major NewView Reverses.
The first OldView takes place at Bilbo and Frodo’s big birthday party at the beginning of the story, where Bilbo is the star and Frodo is treated as unimportant, hardly noticed. At the end of the story, the NewView Reverse is that Frodo is honored after the last battle at the Great Feast of the West, where Bilbo is not even present. So Frodo has gone from being ignored as a Zero at the beginning to being praised, toasted, and lauded as a great Hero at the end—quite a drastic NewView Reversal!
The second OldView occurs near the beginning when Gandalf finally tells Frodo all about the powerful and dangerous Ring he inherited from Bilbo. In that conversation, Frodo has no pity for Gollum, and he feelingly says Gollum “deserves death.” The NewView Reverse of this actually occurs throughout the story as Frodo consistently prevents Sam or anyone else, such as Prince Faramir (Boromir’s brother), from hurting Gollum.
The third and probably most important OldView also occurs during that conversation with Gandalf, when Frodo states how badly he wants the Ring destroyed, passionately bemoaning the fact that he has been given the dangerous Ring.
The NewView Reverse at the end couldn’t be more complete—At the very Crack of Doom within Mount Doom in Mordor, where Frodo has come to destroy the Ring, he surprisingly declares, “I do not choose now to do what I came to do. I will not do this deed. The Ring is mine!”-and he puts the Ring on his finger. Fortunately, Gollum bites off Frodo’s finger with the Ring on it and steals the Ring from Frodo. But Gollum falls into the fatal fires of Mount Doom with the Ring, thus completing for Frodo his failed mission of destroying the Ring.
As I’ve demonstrated, the changing OldView-NewView pattern naturally occurs in all stories, short or long. When you learn to recognize that pattern in stories, you can then much more easily see how all the literary devices (“the trees”) are used by the author to support the overall wholeness (“the forest”) of changing OldView-NewView that is always there, in every story.
With this new tool in hand, you’ll be analyzing literature and writing those formerly dreaded (OldView) literary essays with ease (NewView)!

While surfing the net we discovered this great article from the writer of “The Secret DNA of Writing Essays-And Everything Else” he also has a “Essay Writing Services.
“That’s where my new e-book, The Secret DNA of Analyzing Short Stories, shines,” Drew claimed. “It teaches you how to use NewView Analysis on all short stories, not just those analyzed in my book. And you can use that same NewView method with novels, though there are some differences – and that’s why I’ll be coming out soon with The Secret DNA of Analyzing Novels.”
According to Drew, there will eventually be a series of Secret DNA books, such as, The Secret DNA of Shakespeare’s Plays, The Secret DNA of Writing Advertising, The Secret DNA of Business Writing, The Secret DNA of Education & Teaching, The Secret DNA of Philosophy, etc.|
On the Internet, when you search for deceptive rhetoric or rhetoric hoax, you’ll get more than two million hits for either one. That volume of hits is an echo of what we’ve heard all our lives—that Rhetoric is associated with deception and trickery, even though the college experts try to reassure us that the discipline of Rhetoric is really neutral. Fact is, though, most of what the public knows about Rhetoric is a hoax, especially as regards the origins, the history, and the confusion over Rhetoric in academic circles.
The Origins of Rhetoric
Most people, even school teachers, think the history of Rhetoric began in Greece with Aristotle——-but it didn’t.
In 427 A.D., sixty-year-old Gorgias, a sophist from the Greek colony of Leontini, in Sicily, brought Rhetoric to Athens. He settled in Athens and popularized rhetoric by offering public demonstrations of his skill in public speaking, which was his way of marketing his trade to anyone who wanted to learn to speak as he did.
One of his most apt students, Isocrates, learned the trade and became “the most influential teacher of rhetoric in Aristotle’s time” (On Rhetoric, Kennedy, George A., New York: Oxford University Press, 2006, p. 13).
Why wasn’t Aristotle “the most influential teacher of rhetoric” in his own time?
Because he had his own personal brand of Rhetoric, and he taught it only to students in his small, private school in Athens, called the Lyceum. And his Rhetoric, really more of a collection of notes gathered over the years than anything else, was not published in his lifetime (384-322 B.C.) and was basically unknown outside his small, private school.
In fact, not only was Aristotle’s Rhetoric unknown in his own time, it was largely unknown and untaught throughout the ages. According to George A. Kennedy—a universally praised scholar of ancient Greek culture and a highly esteemed translator of Aristotle’s Rhetoric—Aristotle’s Rhetoric was “obsolete as a school text” throughout most of history (On Rhetoric, p. 308).
The History of Rhetoric
Aristotle’s Rhetoric became obsolete because, first of all, it was lost in Asia Minor for about 200 years after his death in 322 B.C.——-out of circulation, out of usage, out of sight, out of mind.
During that time, probably because it had no real competition, the Rhetoric of Isocrates flourished and became established as the major well-spring for progress in the art of Rhetoric.
Also during that lost time, three very popular major features were added to Isocrates’s Rhetoric that were never developed in Aristotle’s version:
? stasis
(contributed to Rhetoric by Hermagoras of Temnos around 150 B.C.; a systematic series of questions used to develop the central issue in court cases)
? tropes
(one of two major divisions in figures of speech, see below; using words in a way that their normal meaning is replaced with something else, such as, “today the White House issued a statement”—as we know, the White House building did not issue the statement; irony is another example, such as when a sarcastic students says, “Yeah, I just loooove grammar”)
? figures of speech
(the Stoic philosophers of Athens added these to Rhetoric somewhere between 250 and 100 B.C.; figures of speech are divided into two main categories: schemes and tropes; schemes change the ordinary or expected pattern of words, such as, “My voice teacher, a real looker,” which uses the scheme of apposition or renaming; and tropes change the general meaning of words, as discussed in the entry just above).
Scholars throughout history considered these three Rhetorical features as extremely important and studied and discussed them extensively. So they paid little attention to Aristotle’s Rhetoric, which did not have them, after it was found and ‘published’ around 80 B.C. Then, around 190 A.D., Alexander of Aphrodesias published a commentary on Aristotle’s Rhetoric, and scholarly interest revived a bit.
However, throughout the Middle Ages and the Renaissance, the principal texts on Rhetoric were not Aristotle’s, but two books that were based largely on the Rhetoric of Isocrates and its accompanying three supplementary features discussed above. These two books were Rhetorica ad Herrenium (Rhetoric for Herrenium), of unknown authorship, and De Inventione (On Invention), written by Cicero (106-43 B.C.), the great Roman philosopher, politician, and rhetorician.
The modern academic and philosophic interest in Aristotle’s approach to Rhetoric is often traced to the publication of philosopher Kenneth Burke’s book, A Rhetoric of Motives, which was published in 1950. Since then, many other books have investigated and expounded upon Aristotle’s Rhetoric, and more people today are reading and studying it than did so in all the rest of history combined.
So the public perception that Aristotle’s Rhetoric is the Rhetoric that was handed down and taught widely in schools throughout the ages is quite wrong. This hoax has been perpetuated by well-meaning but poorly educated textbook writers.
The Confusion Over Rhetoric in Academic Circles
Now, wouldn’t you think that the actual bedrock principles of Rhetoric, the fundamental principles, would be pretty well-known and established after 2,500 years?
And you would also think that an encyclopedia dedicated to collecting and explaining all the important parts, patterns, processes, purposes, and perspectives of Rhetoric would clearly identify and discuss them, right?
Well, take a look at what the Preface says in the Encyclopedia of Rhetoric (New York: Oxford Press, 2001):
… [this is] our effort to abstract rhetoric as far as we could… and to endeavor to search for its principles.
“Search for its principles”? Immediately following that eye-opener is this:
We recognize the paradox, in view of what we take rhetoric to be. It is nearly impossible either to abstract a temporal cause from its effects or to look anew at a subject anchored in but not confined to an ancient tradition. But the attempt to do so, we believe, sets this work apart from other recent publications such as the Encyclopedia of Rhetoric and Composition….
I’m not even going to attempt to work out the “paradox” reasoning.
But I wonder: Am I reading too much into this? Is Rhetoric as hard to define, is it as unstable and as unclear in what its old principles are and in what its new principles are, as this encyclopedia makes out?
Let’s try another encyclopedia dedicated to Rhetoric—there’s only one other. Looking at the Preface to the Encyclopedia of Rhetoric and Composition (New York: Garland, 1996), we find:
… [this encyclopedia] provides an introduction to rhetoric, including the major periods and personages, concepts and applications. Rhetoric… is becoming ever more difficult to locate in a conceptual framework… many theorists are reconceptualizing rhetoric in its own terms.
This encyclopedia of rhetoric “provides an introduction to Rhetoric”? Only an introduction? It doesn’t go beyond identifying the very basic parts, pieces, and patterns of Rhetoric?
Plainly, this encyclopedia is not claiming to be thorough and comprehensive, claiming that it covers only the basics, “an introduction.” After 2,500 years of discussions and arguments about what Rhetoric is and what it is not, surely there should be more than just “an introduction” to Rhetoric in an encyclopedia dedicated to it!
Is a more comprehensive version, which goes beyond this “introduction,” in the works or being planned? No mention of that.
Furthermore, “Rhetoric… is becoming ever more difficult to locate in a conceptual framework….” What?!!! There’s that “paradox” sort of difficulty, again, as confessed by the first encyclopedia we discussed.
Maybe it would have been helpful to explain what “conceptual framework” means. Perhaps it has something to do with identifying an overall pattern that organizes all the concepts of Rhetoric—”ever more difficult to locate,” even now?
The fact that “many theorists are reconceptualizing Rhetoric “in its own terms” clearly implies that theorists have not been conceptualizing Rhetoric in its own terms, for some reason. Why might that be?
Let me take a shot at it—Perhaps it is because Rhetoric has so very many disorganized parts and pieces, without a clear hierarchical pattern of connections, that it’s literally impossible to pin it all down into an organized pattern. In short, “rhetoric can mean nearly anything” (Professor George Pullman of Georgia State University; conference, What is the New Rhetoric? in Sydney, Australia, 2005) that an ‘expert’ wants it to be and says it is. Given what I’ve shown, here, that seems a decent interpretation of what was said in the prefaces to those two encyclopedias.
So Rhetoric is definitely fair game for being compared to the saying, “You can’t see the forest for the trees.” Rhetoric has so many hundreds of devices and isolated concepts (“trees”), yet it has no clear, overriding principle (“forest”) to hold them all together in a plainly recognizable pattern.
Way back in 1663, the poet and satirist Samuel Butler said what many had said for centuries in more general ways and captured the spirit of this perennial confusion and uncertainty about Rhetoric with his famous, oft-quoted criticism:
For all a rhetorician’s rules teach nothing but to name his tools.
Cute little saying, but Samuel Butler was serious. And so was Herbert Spencer (a very influential English philosopher of the Nineteenth Century, in Europe and America, in both literature and Rhetoric) when he said in his 1852 essay, “The Philosophy of Style,”
The maxims contained in works on composition and rhetoric are presented in an unorganized form. Standing as isolated dogmas—as empirical generalizations, they are neither so clearly apprehended, nor so much respected, as they would be were they deduced from some simple first principle.
My take on what Spencer was saying is this:
The many rules for writing and public speaking are not organized. If they were organized under a single, simple, powerfully unifying principle, then the rules of composition and rhetoric could be clearly understood, taught, and learned.
A much more modern Rhetoric authority, the late Professor Wayne C. Booth of the University of Chicago, plainly agreed but went a little further than Spencer when he said,
Where is the theory, where are the practical rules for ensuring that this talk will not only grab you, as the Madison Avenue rhetoricians say, but keep you grabbed and send you away determined to behave differently? (The Essential Wayne Booth, Wayne C. Booth & Walter Jost, University of Chicago Press: 2007, p. 69)
Booth’s point was that modern writing texts don’t provide a comprehensive theory or practical rules for writing or speaking to a specific audience (neither did Aristotle’s), and that Aristotle’s Rhetoric couldn’t fulfill our modern needs for “a rhetoric of the symposium, of the conference room,” or of other modern situations that were not even imaginable in ancient Greece.
Furthermore, there’s been a whole host of Rhetoric authorities over the last one hundred and fifty years who have been simply clamoring for a “New Rhetoric”—because, like Booth, Spencer, and Butler, they see that Rhetoric simply can’t handle the diversity, depth, breadth, and uniqueness of modern times. These authorities include a number of academic heavyweights: I. A. Richards, Kenneth Burke, Wayne C. Booth, W. R. Winterowd, Francis Christensen, James L. Kinneavy, E. D. Hirsch Jr., Andrea Lunsford, Lisa Ede, Richard Lanham, Reed Way Dasenbrock, C. H. Knoblauch, and Lil Brannon.
So confusion reigns among modern encyclopedias dedicated to Rhetoric, and academic authorities have been complaining about the failings of Rhetoric for hundreds, if not thousands, of years. And they are all clamoring for something new——-because the old Rhetoric just isn’t good enough anymore.
Conclusion
Add to all that, the 2002 report from the National Education Association that only one in five high school seniors can write well enough to do college work. No wonder the National Commission on Writing (NCW) declared in 2003 that there’s a crisis in teaching writing in America! But what did the NCW recommend?
The NCW practically demanded more time, more people, and more money be poured into the same old, ineffective writing instruction, without any basic changes to the fundamental principles that determine how writing is taught! (And, of course, what is taught in writing textbooks and writing classes across America is all based on Rhetoric. Rhetoricians are proud to point this out, by the way.) They want to spend a whole lot more money, time, and people on the same old thing that isn’t working? As they say on Sesame Street, “What’s wrong with this picture?”
One last very telling point—Is there a final test that would either prove or disqualify Rhetoric as the basis for teaching writing?
Yes, there is. It’s called the WHAT IF test, and here it is:
WHATE IF an essay or some other written work has all the pertinent forms of Rhetoric used perfectly in it?
And WHAT IF it isn’t new to the readers?
If the reading audience DOES already know the ideas and is familiar with the presentation, then what’s the point of that writing? Without being new, it has no audience. At the very least, it will be oppressively boring to readers.
If it’s a book intended for public distribution, it won’t see the light of publishing day—people don’t put out good money for old news, and publishers know that very well. Ditto for poetry, short stories, essays, and especially journalistic articles, opinions, and editorials.
And the Rhetoric of Isocrates, the Rhetoric of Aristotle, the Rhetoric of Cicero, the Rhetoric of Quintilian, the Rhetorica ad Herennium, James L. Kinneavy’s Theory of Discourse—not one of them develops a step-by-step process for generating the astonishingly simple but amazing ignored concept of——-
What’s new to the reader
We don’t need a New Rhetoric.
We need a Rhetoric of Newness.
