There are many preferences when it comes to picking the type of wooden fence for your home, from corral to private, but the first thing you need to decide is what the main function of your wood fence is going to be. Is it going to be a decorative fence, or are you constructing a wooden fence for added security? Or maybe you are just looking for added privacy, whatever your reason, there is a wood fence design that will suit your wants.

The following are five popular wood fence designs:

1) Corral
Corral wood fencing is akin to the split rail fence in design but instead of a rustic look to it, the corral fence has a more permanent look to it. Typically the rails, which can number between two to four, are connected to brackets along each wooden post as apposed to running through the centre of the post. The open design allows the breeze to easily pass through but is still effective enough to keep pets and children contained.

2) Picket Fence Design
The next stage of evolution from the corral fence is the wooden picket fence. A wooden picket fence is essentially a corral fence with a number of vertical boards attached to the rails. When you think of a picket fence the first image that comes to mind is the typical white picket fence. A wooden picket fence can add charm to any home while still being a useful way to keep pets and children safe.

3) Privacy Fence Design
Most privacy fences fall under the palisade or stockade type of design. A wooden privacy fence ranges in height but they are usually stand around six feet and can be a great way to turn the backyard into a private sanctuary. They keep prying eyes from looking in and will keep your pets and children safe. Although there are many different designs that can be used a wooden privacy fence typically has vertical boards that are affixed to the rails without leaving any gaps in between.

4) Shadowbox Fence Design
The wooden shadowbox fence design is the most commonly built fence in urban areas. A type of privacy fence, the shadowbox fence differs slightly in design by attaching the wooden boards on alternating sides. This allows much more breeze to pass through the fence while still acting as a privacy fence.

5) Split Rail
The split rail wooden fence design is a very rural fence design commonly found in the countryside. It is a very open design that consists of two or three slats that are slid through the centre of wooden posts. Split rail fences were typically used in urban areas to make boundary lines, but they can still add a nice country feel to any urban setting.

Wood fences are easy to maintain and repair. They make a great safety barrier to keep your pets and children safe and can provide much need privacy. In general, a wood fence design is one of the best ways to add a touch of class to your yard while keeping the overall costs low.
