The most current installment in the Transformers saga hit retail store shelves on June 22, 2010 – as a video game, that is. Activision’s take on the Transformers story line focuses on what could be thought to be a pre-quel of sorts, or an origin tale of how the chief with the Autobots rose to his revered status.
Prime Before His Time
Fanatics of the Transformer’s animation series from the nineteen-eighties, and by extension Hollywood’s newest version in the tale, will instantaneously identify the difference in the new/young Cybertronian Optimus Prime. For starters the video game’s story is set on the transformer’s home planet, Cybertron, ravaged by the war between Decepticons and Autobots.
Instead of the traditional big-rig Optimus Prime, Activision opted to give the leader from the Autobots a different alternate form compared with what followers are accustomed to seeing. The “younger” prime takes the form of an armored vehicle mounted with cannon prepared to blast.
Origin Of A Hero
The plot of War for Cybertron takes place well ahead of the Autobots come into contact with human beings and in a sense fills in plot holes noticed in the nineteen-eighties animation show that commenced the Transformers saga. Optimus Prime’s mission in the game is to rally the Autobots to save planet Cybertron from Megatron and also the Decepticons since the leader of the Autobots, Zeta Prime, is revealed to have fallen in battle.
The Cybertronian Optimus Prime becomes, in some way, thrust into a position of authority to test his mettle. Rather than the confident, formidable leader observed in the television cartoon and big-dollar silver screen creation, Activision’s portrayal of Optimus Prime focuses on the hefty burden and sacrifice of management. You might say that Optimus Prime, like a young, unsophisticated general, is promoted before he is prepared.
Prime On New Platforms
The main core of Transformer followers, at the end of the day, most likely will remain faithful to the franchise and buy into the video game’s storyline. Activision, to see to it that supporters do, has licensed the War for Cybertron on all video game platforms like Xbox 360, Playstation 3, Nintendo’s Wii and DS.
So far both the video game and action figures have received good ratings from buyers, but in all fairness, several Transformer hardcores say the game play in the game itself leaves something to be desired. By and large, Activision’s most recent take on Optimus Prime works nicely.
