ITC closes the book on HTC’s first complaint against Apple, still working on its sequels

HTC vs. Apple

Remember that first shot across Apple’s bow that HTC fired way back May of 2010? No? We don’t blame you. Since that initial exchange of complaints against each other the patent war has spun almost completely out of control. Well, in October an ITC judge handed down an initial ruling, rejecting the Taiwanese manufacturer’s claim that Cupertino and crew had infringed upon its patents. Now, almost four months later, a final judgment has been issued, consistent with the initial decision — Apple is not in violation of the patents in question (which primarily concern the dialer and power management features) and the investigation has officially been closed. Don’t get your hopes up too much though, this is just the first complaint in a long series of suits the two have filed against each other and HTC can always appeal in a federal circuit court. In other words, there’s plenty more where this came from.

BlackBerry Messenger 6.0 screenshots leak

bbm 6
A leaked early version of RIM’s upcoming BlackBerry Messenger 6 has been making the rounds since late February, but images of the new app are just now beginning to appear. Over at CrackBerry, the crew has shared a handful of images of BBM 6 in action. Unfortunately, you won’t get a glimpse at a chat or file transfer — only the profile screens (after the break) and what you see above. All that’s really revealed so far is the option to set custom contact and chat colors and BlackBerry OS 6.1-style icons.

CrackBerry also warns against installing the leaked BBM 6 app. There’s no guarantee this app hasn’t been tampered with, and BlackBerry devices are becoming a more common target for cybercriminals.

AT&T’s hungry eyes turning toward Leap, Dish or MetroPCS?

AT&T's hungry eyes turning toward Leap, Dish or MetroPCS?
Publicly, at least, AT&T is bursting at the seams as it runs out of space to put all of its customers. The failed $39 billion purchase of T-Mobile was all about trying to match (or better) Verizon’s reserves of wireless spectrum. Given the FCC’s blocking of LightSquared and stymieing of future spectrum auctions for the time being, AT&T needs to make some more acquisitions — the $1.9 billion purchase of Qualcomm’s small slice of the airwaves isn’t enough. If the Wall Street Journal is to be believed, there’s a whiteboard in Whitacre Tower with Dish, Leap and MetroPCS written all over it. Reportedly, a purchase of Leap is the nearest to fruition, with “under the table” talks already underway. However, the Cricket Wireless operator would only provide a short-term solution to Ma Bell’s very long-term woes. The other big target is Dish Network’s reserved spectrum, kept back for its own planned broadband network, but if it fails to get Government approval, it might look to offload it. Third on the roster and marked as “highly unlikely” is a purchase of MetroPCS. The carrier was bitterly opposed to the T-Mo merger and pouted at the idea of purchasing some of Big Blue’s divested assets, so if those two met around a table, they’d have a lot of awkward apologizing to do.

Well if you’ve got queries for the folks working the LHC, attempting to unlock the secrets of the universe then hit up the source link for a live Hangout at that most nerdy of social networks Google+. The conversation starts at 1 pm eastern time.

Next Generation H.265 Codec Gets Ready to Rock with Ultra HDTV Resolution in 2013

The Joint Collaborative Team on Video Coding hit a new milestone for the H.265 video codec, which is the next generation MPEG media codec that will usher in 8K display resolutions, otherwise known as Ultra HDTV (UHDTV). That works out to 4320p (7680×4320) and offers 16 times more pixels than today’s Full HD 1080p (1920×1080) HDTVs.

H.265 is also known as High Efficiency Video Coding (HEVC), a new standard that could be ratified as early as next year, or so that’s the goal. According to eWeek, the standards group mentioned above recently came up with a committee draft during a meeting in San Jose, an important milestone for H.265, though not the final hurdle.

Advocates of H.265 initially said the codec could provide improvements to streaming efficiency by 35 percent to 40 percent over today’s H.264 codecs, but one of the speakers present at the meeting said it could be as high as 67 percent.

None of this means you should toss your existing HDTV on eBay or Craigslist. It will still be another year, at the earliest, before H.265 receives final ratification, and then it will be a waiting game for supported TV sets and UHDTV streams to emerge.

Time Warner Cable’s TWC TV launches for PC, brings live TV streaming to the desktop

After expanding its live TV streaming from iPads to iPhones, Time Warner Cable is going in the other direction and offering the service on PCs. The PC version of TWC TV launched today in beta — still no word on streaming to Android devices or HDTVs yet — but the Silverlight player will work on Windows and OS X, in Internet Explorer, Firefox, Safari or Chrome. According to the official blog it has more than just streaming, with remote control over compatible set-top boxes and DVR scheduling also included. Of course, the same restrictions still apply here as they have on tablets and phones, with playback only while connected to your home network. If you’re a Time Warner customer, hit the link below to sign in and try it out, or hit the blog for more details on what works where.

Death Call vs Warm Gun: iPhone steampunk western game shootout

We all know what to expect in the western genre – cowboys, shootouts, bar brawls… Sometimes a slight twist is needed to keep things fresh. Two iPhone games, Death Call and Warm Gun, take the classic western feel and throw in a bit of sci-fi charm.

Add an unnecessary cog here, a tesla generator there, some ostentatious goggles, and blammo, you’ve got a steampunk game in the old west. Despite it being a pretty small niche, each title tackles the challenge very differently. Which is better? Which is most shiny? We loaded them both up on the iPhone for an old-fashioned, new-fangled shootout, and you better believe we aimed to misbehave — iMore style.

Googleplex expansion plans hint at Project X lab, wireless testing facilities

Googleplex expansion plans hint at Project X lab, wireless testing facilities
Google’s eyeing up some vacant space at the end of its lawn to throw $120 million at a Grand Designs-style extension to its Mountain View campus. Residents will soon see the @Home lab, purportedly to test fully formed consumer devices and whatever secret home entertainment / wireless communications gear we’ve heard rumblings about. The new development will enable Project X (the interesting one with the James Bond-gizmos, not the lecture series website) to move into a meatier facility where they can perfect projects like Majel and the self-driving car. The most notable development (according to business-types, anyway) is the “Experience Center,” a 120,000 square foot private museum / demonstration space for Google to schmooze its most important clients in style (wait, aren’t we the most important clients?). VIPs will be invited to play with the newest toys the company can produce before gorging themselves on canapés, or something. Californians wandering past 1600 Shoreline Blvd down the road from the Googleplex, might also notice a new building that’s not covered in official branding — because it’s going to be a new wireless testing facility that’s being shielded from external signals. At least, that’s where we’ll be pitching a tent with a couple of long lenses when it opens for business.
